At 23 years of age, Insuh Yoon is quite an accomplished photographer. For someone who just picked up a point and shoot one day and it stuck, he is a remarkable lensjockey. His use of natural light and nature itself makes a nice juxtaposition to the very beautiful girls he captures through his lens. I admire his ability to make these models feel so uninhibited and exuding such a confidence in front of the camera. It is not an easy task to connect in such a way and I think he does it brilliantly. His photos are truly stunning and I just can't wait to see what happens in the next 5 years. Yoon currently attends the Fashion Institute of Technology which I'm sure does not leave him dry of subject matter.
You seem to have a fascination with the female form....how did this admiration begin?
I think being male means always having an admiration for the female form. I've always appreciated the beauty of the opposite sex.
You work with these beautiful girls on a constant basis and the photos look so natural and relaxed...
how do you go about making a model feel so comfortable in her own skin?
Usually when i'm shooting I find a quiet/private location where the model and I can be left alone without many distractions. I try to provide a calm atmosphere
where the model feels comfortable with me and that makes it easier for them to connect with the camera.
What was the first thing you ever shot? and the last?
I started experimenting with photography a few years ago, the first things I shot back then were street scenes around new york city when I was about 19.
The last shoot I had was with my friend Alex.
Do you have a particular technique you feel use most? Is there something you haven't learned in photography that you are working towards?
Yes. I like to push the highlights in my photos as far I can without blowing out the image. Controlled over-exposure.
I would like to try shooting at night, and I would like to learn timelapse photography because I think it's
fascinating.
You have a lot of outdoor shots, beautiful imagery, do you enjoy it more than studio ones?
I love shooting in studio but I feel that
I tend to do the same things over and over sometimes.
Whereas, when I'm shooting outside I have a million different things that I could do with a model in a given
location. I love the spontaneity of shooting outside on a gorgeous day.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
graduating from FIT will be my biggest accomplishment, in a few months I'll be able to say that I got a degree from a good
school doing what I love.
What do you do when you aren't getting the shot you want?
Alot of times when I feel a shoot isn't going so well i'll keep shooting anyway. Many times I've had excellent images come out during the editing process from shoots
that I didn't enjoy.
What do you feel you bring to your photos? What would you like to be best known for?
I think i'm good at making a person look their best... I think I know how to make a person comfortable even if they don't know me that well or we just met.
I would like to be known on a level as someone like Ellen von Unwerth or
Ryan Mcginley. Someone who elevates "erotic" photography and brings a new aesthetic into the mainstream.
Is there anything you don't enjoy shooting?
I enjoy shooting everything but I do enjoy shooting female subjects above all else.
If you were a musical instrument which one would you be?
I'd be a theremin just because they're so odd but awesome at the same time.
